Jeffrey Epstein purchased the 7622 acre Zorro Ranch near Stanley in Santa Fe County, New Mexico, in 1993. The estate featured a 26700 square foot mansion, private airstrip, hangar, and helipad. Epstein owned the property until his purported death in 2019. It sold in August 2023 to San Rafael Ranch LLC, linked to the Huffines family.

Strategic Location Near Major Physics and Nuclear Labs

Zorro Ranch sits roughly 50 miles from Los Alamos National Laboratory and occupies a central position between Los Alamos and Sandia National Laboratories. Both facilities conduct classified nuclear weapons research and advanced physics programs. In a 2019 interview released in US Department of Justice files, Epstein explained that post Cold War funding cuts at Los Alamos had driven many high energy physicists toward private opportunities. He described the ranch as a location to engage those experts through the nearby Santa Fe Institute.

Epstein’s Funding of Leading Physicists

Epstein provided substantial financial support to prominent physicists. He funded research by Nobel laureate Murray Gell-Mann, co founder of the Santa Fe Institute, contributing hundreds of thousands of dollars. Gell Mann publicly acknowledged Epstein as a supporter. Gell-Mann died of cancer on May 24, 2019, at age 89.

Epstein hosted or arranged meetings at Zorro Ranch with Santa Fe Institute physicists focused on complex systems and high energy physics. He also funded a 2006 physics conference in the US Virgin Islands attended by Stephen Hawking, whose cosmology and gravity research aligned with broader scientific interests Epstein cultivated.

Private Infrastructure at the Ranch

In 2016, while Epstein owned the property, a bidirectional private microwave communications link was installed. FCC licenses WQXY316 and WQXY300, granted on July 12 2016, connected the main residence to a tower at Sandia Crest. These licenses remained active under Zorro Development Corp. even after the property changed hands. The setup has drawn scrutiny due to its proximity to sensitive national laboratories.

Criminal Investigations

New Mexico authorities reopened investigations into Zorro Ranch activities in early 2026. The state Department of Justice launched a criminal probe, and a legislative Epstein Truth Commission gained subpoena power in February 2026. Searches of the property took place in March 2026. Allegations center on sex trafficking and abuse, with some claims involving young women recruited under education or career opportunities. Investigations focus on criminal conduct rather than scientific programs.
